WAGON TIPPLERS

Wagon tipplers is one of the first machinery i saw when i started my career . When you are fond of machines and a true mechanical engineer, you will always be thrilled when ever you see a new machine. And that was the exact position of me when i first saw wagon tippler .

(Note: The tippler is in tippled postion , so dont get confused , Its a Rotary Tippler)

Before going in to full part wise details of wagon tippler lets first discuss its operational procedure, about wagons and transportation.

Wagons carry a load varying from 40 to 60 tons per wagon , you have to note that it is the capacity i am talking about because if you put another cargo with lesser density automatically the load will be lesser. There will be approximately 58 to 60 wagons driven by an engine, this in port terminology is referred to as RAKE i.e one rake is an engine carrying 59 wagons . Each rake carries 3000 to 4000 tons load and transport from one part of the country, where the respective mines of corresponding raw material is located , to other part of country where it has to be delivered , or in port terminology STAKED.

( This is a simple wagon , for identifying and understanding)

So now we will see the operation from starting, the rake enters in to the port , until then the route, transport , security and everything will be controlled by Railway department, when the rake enters the port premsis and again until after the unloading of the wagons, the rake will be looked after the port management , be it private or government owned . The engine which is pulling it changes its position , it comes back of wagons for pushing . Depending on the type of tipplers ,the  number of wagons will be divided , for example if it is a twin tippler then the 58 wagons is divided into 27 each and two engines pushes the wagons.

HOW THE PUSHING THING HAPPENS ?

There will be an operator present for the tippler in the tippler operating room . Once the wagons and engines are ready ,(Note : wagons are ready ! , what does it mean ? . Yes the phrase has a meaning , Each wagon is connected to the other wagon by knuckles , and the brakes are pneumatic , So for each wagon there will be a connected hose running , so they have to be separated, Utmost safety and care should be taken while removing the knuckles as lot of mishaps occurs during this time ). the operator gives the signal , the signal post will be high and can be seen by the engine operator , so he takes that as go on and pushes the wagon until the charger position .The engine operator also communicates through walkie for additional safety .

(Note: In todays machinery almost everything is logically controlled , so these machinery is controlled through PLC , so the signalling, timing ,everything is logically controlled to eliminate human errors)

There will be another operator and operating room for charger operation . Once the engine comes to the position of charger, the engines and other wagons move back to a safe position from the wagon that has to be tippled . The charger operator now operates the charger which takes the wagon on to the tippler platform table . Where the wagon is placed in a safe position to be tippled . There will be personal present to take care of the wagon position . As once in a blue moon the loaded wagon may move forward and go to the yard without being tippled if its speed and position are not controlled.once everything is in its place and safe , the person present there gives signal through walkie i.e VHF to operator of tippler . The tippler operator then gives command to tipple and the platform rises to a position and the wagon is supported by the supporting arms ( Note:some tipplers these are mechanical i.e simple arms with rubber pads to support wagons, in some tipplers there will hydraulically operated supporting arms , these are mostly found in rotary tipplers)
